According to medical research estimates, urinary incontinence affects 10 million Americans, mostly women over the age of 55. Most of these people can be made better or cured with a simple program of behavioral training that can be implemented at home. The program, when properly followed, has proven to be most effective as a cure, or in alleviating many cases of urinary incontinence.
The training consists of patient education and a strict schedule for urination. The patients are taught relaxation techniques and how to distract the mind from the urgency to urinate. Under a doctor’s supervision, the program can be implemented in the patients’ homes.
More information about this program is available from a national nonprofit advocacy organization, Help For Incontinent People. Call 1-800-BLADDER or write to: Bladder Retaining, Box 554RD, Union, S.C. 29379. Include a self- addressed, stamped envelope.
How To Disease-Proof Your Body For A Longer, Healther Life
Diseases can be put into two main catagories — (1) Infectious diseases or (2) Noninfectious diseases.
Infectious diseases can be caused by exposure, by bacteria, or viruses. The tiny organisms can invade the body and infect it with a disease. A good example is the AIDS virus. You cannot get AIDS unless you are exposed to the AIDS virus. However, just because you are exposed to a particular infectious disease — that doesn’t mean that you will get the disease.
You can lessen your chances of getting an infectious disease by (1) Taking steps to avoid exposure to that disease, (2) Keeping your body healthy so that it can fight bacteria or viruses, (3) Recognizing the symptoms of a disease so that you can get early treatment.
