VITAMINS: THEIR GOOD INTERNAL

Natural Insect Repellent

According to a study conducted at Lake Superior State College in Michigan, vitamin B1 supplements (thiamine) may provide a helpful natural bug repellent. As part of the study, volunteers were placed in two groups—those who took thiamine supplements and those who took a placebo or phony supplement. All of the volunteers were sent out into the woods immediately after taking the real thiamine supplements and the placebos. Once outdoors, the volunteers kept track of the number of mosquito bites they received. The results showed that the volunteers who took the thiamine supplement experienced the fewer number of bites.

The study at Lake Superior State College involved only a few volunteers. New research is underway, involving more people, in an attempt to confirm the earlier indication that thiamine supplements may provide an effective natural insect repellent.

Vitamin C Protects Sperm Cell DNA – Prevent Birth Defects

Researchers have found strong evidence indicating that men with inadequate levels of vitamin C may be more likely to have DNA (the basic molecule for transmitting hereditary traits) damage in their sperm. This could lead to an increase in their chances of fathering children who have birth defects. The research also indicates that smokers appear to be at the greatest risk. Medical experts recommend, for all men, a diet that features fruits and vegetables which are high in vitamin C content. In some cases, daily supplements are recommended— especially for smokers.

Vitamin E And Parkinson’s Disease

Preliminary research has found that vitamin E, or a combination of vitamins E and C may delay the appearance of tremors, rigidity and loss of balance, which are all associated with Parkinson’s disease. The significance of the discovery is that vitamin E (and possibly C) may make it possible to postpone the need for therapy with levodopa. Researchers are hoping that a larger, ongoing study will be able to shed more light on the matter. As of now, nothing conclusive has been established.

Vitamin E can be found in such foods as green leafy vegetables, fish, vegetable oils, dried beans, whole-grain cereals, and eggs.
