In the short term fluid tablets (diuretics, water pills) remove excess fluid from the body. In the long term they cause fluid retention, the very thing they are supposed to treat.
Fluid tablets are often prescribed to sufferers of allergies, Candida yeast infections and malnutrition to remove the puffiness from their fingers, ankles, eyes, face, legs and wrists or counteract the general weight gain that often accompanies these conditions.
Fluid tablets work by interfering with normal kidney function. They create metabolic imbalances in the tubule cells of the kidney. This inhibits the tubule cells’ capacity to absorb water and nutrients as they pass through the tubules en route to the collecting ducts. As a result, water plus vitamins and minerals pass out of the body en masse, giving rise to insidious malnutrition.
After a while on fluid tablets, vitamin and mineral deficiencies begin to manifest as metabolic imbalances elsewhere in the body. Symptoms of these metabolic imbalances are many and varied. They can include: weakness, fatigue, light-headedness, dizziness, muscle cramps, thirst, flushing, prickly tingling of the skin (paraesthesia), blurred vision, rashes, low blood pressure on standing (postural hypotension), hypoglycaemia, aggravation of existing diabetes, increased blood uric acid levels, anaphylactic shock (usually in the severely malnourished), peripheral circulatory failure (especially in the elderly), thrombocytopenia (low levels of blood platelets) and leucopenia (low levels of white blood cells).
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a significant stress to the body. When the body is under stress the adrenal glands work overtime and more adrenal hormones than normal are produced. Aldosterone is one such hormone. Its job is to regulate the body’s fluid levels by stimulating the kidneys to retain sodium and water when the levels of these two are getting low. An excess of aldosterone means greater than normal quantities of sodium and water are retained. This is why people under stress have trouble losing weight while on a weightloss diet or put on weight without any change in their diet or eating habits.
Fluid tablets create a vicious cycle. By causing vitamin and mineral deficiencies they raise the body’s stress and aldosterone levels which causes greater fluid retention and the need for more fluid tablets. The metabolic imbalances that this cycle of ever-increasing stress and quantity of fluid tablets cause are such that in time you become hooked on fluid tablets.
If you reach the stage of fluid tablet dependency you’ll experience a significant weight gain the moment you stop taking them. Because it takes the aldosterone levels about fourteen to twenty-one clays to come down the weight could last for that long. The Metabolism-Balancing Program plus the supplementary vitamins and minerals and rest reduce the stress and aldosterone levels within a week. Be patient, the weight will come down as the metabolism balances. Don’t freak out and go back on the fluid tablets if your weight shoots up. Just wait it out and everything will be OK.
If you are already on fluid tablets for heart, lung or blood pressure problems, consult your doctor before doing anything. If you are not on fluid tablets and your doctor wants to treat your allergy, Candida, malnutrition or stress-based fluid retention problem with fluid tablets, refuse his or her offer and follow the treatment program outlined in this book with his or her supervision. Herbal, so called natural, diuretics create the same metabolic imbalances as the drug-based ones. Don’t use them as they too treat only the symptoms of fluid retention and not the cause.
