SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS: GLUCOSE METABOLISM AND HYPOGLYCAEMIA

Hypoglycaemia means that the levels of glucose in the blood have dropped so low that cells of the body and brain are being starved of this vital energy-producing food. Tiredness, depression, mood swings, confusion, poor concentration, low frustration tolerance, temper tantrums, the shakes, poor memory, disorganisation are also caused by hypoglycaemia.

Hypoglycaemia is not, as many think, a disease in itself. It is a ’symptom’ of many different disease conditions. For instance, hypoglycaemia can be caused by:

• stress;

• too much white flour and sugar in the diet;

• skipping meals;

• allergies;

• a malfunctioning liver;

• vitamin and mineral deficiency;

• an under-active thyroid.

Just as allergies can cause the blood glucose levels to drop, a drop in blood glucose levels caused by other factors can trigger allergies. Low-grade, non-symptom-producing allergies can be exacerbated into full-blown, symptom-producing allergies when hypoglycaemia is caused by any of the above factors.

By providing three balanced meals a day and supplementary vitamins and minerals, the Metabolism-Balancing Program removes all the other causes of hypoglycaemia. Chromium helps insulin to get the glucose into the cells. Vitamins B3, B1, B6, B12 and C help the thyroid hormone speed up its conversion to energy.

Mineral iodine, vitamins B12, folic acid, B6, B5, E, A and B1 help the thyroid gland to make thyroid hormone and iron facilitates the carriage of oxygen that makes all the other processes possible. This balanced inflow of glucose into the cells, and its subsequent conversion to energy keeps all the cells (especially the white blood cells), tissues and organs of the body functioning in a balanced way.

The brain manifests this state of balance by remaining calm, yet mentally alive and on the ball. The white blood cells manifest it by not over-reacting and causing allergic reactions when non-life-threatening substances, such as dust, pollen, grasses, moulds or foods enter the body. The liver manifests it by not allowing too much glucose to be released into the blood during times of stress and the pancreas manifests it by not over-reacting to glucose’s presence in the blood. (It’s the secretion of insulin by the pancreas that causes the blood glucose levels to drop precipitously.)

In this way the Metabolism-Balancing Program removes the causes of functional hypoglycaemia and in so doing removes one of the major triggers of allergic reactions.

This leaves allergy as the only other cause of hypoglycaemia and glucose imbalance. An allergic reaction can take place in any tissue or organ of the body. If allergies inflame the thyroid gland they can disrupt glucose metabolism by making the gland over- or under-function—the latter causing hypoglycaemia and over-weight. If allergies attack the liver, pancreas or adrenal glands their metabolisms can become so distorted that hypoglycaemia develops immediately. Allergic hypoglycaemia is a whacky, unpredictable thing that can be here today and gone tomorrow, whether treated by drug medication or not. This is because allergies are migratory by nature and can move randomly from one tissue to another.

For this reason many people erroneously believe that they’ve ‘outgrown’ their allergies, not realising that the new set of seemingly unrelated symptoms that have sprung up elsewhere in their body is caused by the same allergy.

The random, unpredictable nature of allergies means that ‘allergic hypoglycaemia’ can be turned on and off to no set pattern, leaving the sufferer as confused as the physician. This is particularly so if the thyroid gland is the target organ, as the drugs taken for the affected thyroid can cause adverse reactions when the gland suddenly rights itself.

It is only with sound nutrition, sensible eating habits, appropriate exercise, adequate oxygen, water and rest, and by containing allergies, yeast, bacterial and viral infections, that the metabolism can ever be fully balanced.
