Convallaria — the Latin name for lily of the valley — is best used in the form of a standardised fresh plant extract, together with Scilla maritima (sea onion or squill). It strengthens the heart muscles and extends its favourable effect to the blood vessels. If the patient is given the same dose as would be given with digitalis, its action will be more gentle and produce no side effects such as are engendered by accumulation. Digitalis sometimes proves ineffective in cases of a weak heart resulting from influenza, pneumonia or other lung and infectious diseases, whereas lily of the valley invariably does the job more effectively. The importance to our health of having good teeth is still not sufficiently appreciated. It is the same with health in general. We begin to value it only when we have lost it and are sick. Many people think it is enough to know that there are doctors available if they need them, and they do not worry any further. They similarly rely on the dentist if something goes wrong with their teeth, and for this reason they do not give any thought to the importance of keeping their teeth healthy. In a figurative sense, we could call the teeth the front line defences of our body.

Metaphorical speech being the oldest and most effective way of explaining something, I would like to compare the teeth to armour-plated turrets. The hard outer tooth enamel could be called the armour-plating because the enamel is the toughest tissue of the body, built up of very hard calcium fluoride. The conscientious doctor is sometimes baffled because a seemingly serious case takes an unexpected turn for the better. On the other hand, the opposite can also happen: the patient seems to be making fine progress but suddenly the picture changes and the illness takes such a rapid turn for the worse that no skill, no effort, is able to arrest it. Even the best surgeon, highly skilled in his profession, may suffer the tragedy inflicted by the merciless Angel of Death in that his best friend, sister, mother or even his own wife passes away prematurely. Or the scourge of cancer may take hold of the doctor himself and all the efforts of his colleagues, using the most up-to-date therapies, prove to be in vain.

All this is very sad and we are filled with sorrow. For how can one help the patient to escape such an end? It would be a great relief for all of us, would it not, if there were some natural remedy that could cure the disease. Sadly, though, even the most experienced specialist knows of no such remedy. True, there are some good medicines that may have brought relief for some patients, but unfortunately there is no specific remedy for cancer, one that cures it without fail. What is more, it seems that we will never find one. This, too, is a tragic prospect. Once again, patients, nurses, pharmacologists, as well as doctors, are confronted by a puzzle. Is it not true that conscientious efforts are being made to find a cure, and endless hours and huge sums of money are being spent on research? Should it all be to no avail? Is it not true that those who seek will also find?
